Alternative Advent

Anyone who's been following me on Twitter should know all about this, but throughout advent I am releasing 25 new video clips, one per day, created using footage from my archive of live visuals as well as never-before-seen clips. Each is accompanied by a new or rare track created by bands and musicians that I have invited to collaborate on the project. I started to create content for the live arena as a way of giving life to graphical ideas that may never have otherwise seen the light of day. This project’s musical participants have treated their submissions in a similar way, making the calendar an opportunity to air musical phrases and experiments that never made it into fully-formed songs; an outlet for unrealised ideas.
We've got some really exciting artists contributing, and it's been a bit of a mammoth undertaking, but I'm really excited about it.

I'm in love with his magazine cover for Little White Lies this month.

I saw a poster for it in central London yesterday and nearly ripped it off the wall.

It reminds me, back when I was a student my university trip was to San Francisco. I couldn't afford to go, but the class went and met Michael Gillette. Someone recorded the hour-long interview on a camcorder, and I've totally got a copy of the tape on DVD somewhere. I used to watch it repeatedly back in the day.

Stewart Lee speaks of the massive implication of raised university fees in the UK.

What he says so eloquently really epitomises why so many of us fear for the future when these actions affect the current young generation.

Knowledge, education and the arts are fundamentally vital for society. Learning from history, exploring the potentials of science, gaining a further exploration of ourselves, our society and the expression of what it is to 'be' via the arts makes us human.

The cuts are affecting us all, but I fear slashing education and the arts in such a dramatic way will have more of an impact than we can comprehend at the moment. Give it 20 years; when we can't correct the damage.

It is not a luxury.

Chris Sweeney's Charlie Le Mindu Showreel and Film Makers for Fashion Film

I'm a MASSIVE fan of Le Mindu's work. In case you're unaware of him. Charlie's a French-born hair designer based in London. He first made an impact on me when he created the stunning hair piece for Alex Turvey's Frankenfashion...

From there he's been taking the fashion world be storm, and is most well known for creating Lady Gaga's wigs (and in some cases - whole hair outfits)

He's been the controversial face of the past few London fashion weeks with his shows (styled by the fabulous Anna Trevelyan).

The image below was pretty much plastered over every London news paper the other week.

Now he's made another amazing move by working with talented film director Chris Sweeney to create his showreel piece....

I think this is as good a time as ever to remind you all of Chris Sweeney's collaboration with Sarah Chatfield and the resulting film for YSL a few years ago...

And Nez's film for Halston...

You Wait For Ages, and Then Two Come Along At Once

This morning's been a good morning thanks to the discovery of two of the most inspirational pieces of work I've seen in a long time.

I STRONGLY recommend you take a break at some point today to check out the work below...

First up is a music promo for Papa Vs Pretty. "Wrecking Ball" was created over a period of 5 months by 19 year old Australian director Guy Verge Wallace.

Inspired by the dinner scene from Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', and with massive nods to Svankmajer and Gilliam, nothing beats seeing someone's heart and soul being poured into plastecine and creating a triumph.

This reminds me that sometimes there are those special projects where obsession is the only way through. That's where the magic happens...

The second comes from a more established name, with David O'Reilly making a return with his new short film "The External World".

Having seen O'Reilly talk twice over the past 18 months (once at BUG at the BFI, London, and the other at the Playgrounds Festival in Tilberg, Holland) it's great to see this new film finally see the light of the internet.

For me, this cements O'Reilly's place as one of the most (if not THE most) unique minds in the animation world at this moment in time

THE HAUNT - VJ PREMIER

Hello everyone.

It is my great pleasure to announce that tomorrow night will be the world premier of my VJ set.

Culminating from my work I've created over the past few years, and throwing in a few extra bits and a few of my favourite film references to create a pretty psychedelic accompaniment to a killer line up of entertainment.

I will playing at the launch of the new Brighton-based club THE HAUNT.

Music will be provided by Mirrors (live), Is Tropical (live), Kim Ann Foxmann (from Hercules and Love Affair (DJ)), and Romy (from the XX (DJ)).

Should be a LOT of fun.

We'll be filming the event, so stay tuned for an update on that.

Every now and again life makes interesting little twists and turns.

Tonight I met Laura Pannack at the D&AD Student Sharp'ner event that we both talked at.

I'd known Laura for years via mutual friends from Brighton (where we both studied). I don't think we ever met when we were living in that city, but we met numerous times when our mutual friends came up to visit London and we all met up.

I knew she was a photographer, but not much more.

Well, it turns out I've been following her work without putting a face to the images.

I'm an almost obsessional follower of the Guardian Weekend Magazine. The magazine's featured Laura's work numerous time over the past year, including a big article on her brilliant ongoing documentation of YBN (Young British Naturists), which I felt was one of the most fascinating, and beautifully captured photographic collections I saw last year.

Sensitivity and human empathy is at the forefront of her personality and work. I'm really excited about all of her ongoing and future projects.

Phew! It really does go to show, you sometimes never know who you're sharing a pint with.

Just beautiful work.

D&AD Student Sharp'ner

Tonight I will be speaking at the D&AD Student Sharp'ner talks. It's all to do with the D&AD Student Awards.

I've been asked to speak for bang-on 6minutes, and apparently I'm first on. So come see me talk if you'd like.

The event takes place at Vibe bar, Brick Lane, E1 6QL. Starts at 6:30pm, and will last no longer than a couple of hours.
